Born the son of a German-Jewish chemist in Wiesbaden, Eliasberg grew up in Berlin, where he studied medicine, mathematics, and philosophy. He became interested at an early age in the relatively new field of psychiatry, and from 1910 to 1912 studied and worked at Heidelberg's Psychiatrische Universitätsklinik .
